Meet The Mets! Meet The Mets! Step Right Up and Bet The Mets!

How can you not be romantic about baseball? Brad Pitt asks this famous question after his second baseman unknowingly hits a home run and trips over first base. And how can you not bet on the Mets, I ask, as they clinch the wild card on the final day of the series and then go on to win their first playoff game on the road in Milwaukee? This marks their second win in three days in the same ballpark.

Baseball, more than any other sport, has teams of destiny. Personally, I find the game a bit dull—unless you’re watching it in person or on the radio. But the Major League postseason? That's a different story. Teams catch fire, and often the best regular-season team doesn’t take home the trophy. That’s the magic we’re seeing right now—at least for the moment.

With one swing of the bat in the ninth inning on Monday, Francisco Lindor guaranteed the Mets would have a postseason. Then, yesterday in Milwaukee, the Mets once again overcame a one-run deficit, scoring five runs in the fifth to defeat the Brewers 8-4. Sure, I could dig up some down-to-earth data to predict that the Mets will win tonight—but where’s the romance in that? At plus money, take the Mets.
