Trailer Treasure: Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning
"Every choice has led to this," Tom Cruise dramatically posted before sharing the first trailer for his latest Ethan Hunt adventure—and, based on the title, presumably his last. Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning will likely pick up right where Dead Reckoning Part One left off, with Hunt racing against the dangerous Gabriel to reach a submarine at the bottom of the sea and stop the sinister AI program, "The Entity."
If that brief synopsis didn’t make a lick of sense to you… that's understandable, but c’mon! You’ve got to get caught up on your Mission: Impossibles. Cruise's action franchise has been the best thing going since its third film in 2006, when J.J. Abrams took the reins and the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman delivered the perfect movie villain in the form of Owen Davian.
In the four films since, Tom Cruise has dazzled with practical effects, jaw-dropping set pieces, and his signature Ethan Hunt sprint. Christopher McQuarrie came aboard about a decade ago for the fifth film, Rogue Nation, and has since managed to connect all the characters, pieces, and stakes of these impossible missions. He’s crafted Ethan Hunt not just as a super-spy but as a well-rounded character who follows a code and cares deeply for his team and the world.
This has been the best action franchise of the 21st century, and maybe all time, since J.J breathed new life into the Impossible Mission Force and Ethan Hunt. The Final Reckoning appears to have all the cornerstones of a classic and will, hopefully, be a fitting send-off to some of the most fun and original films of the last 20 years.
On May 5th, I’ll be choosing to accept a large-format theater, a popcorn with peanut M&Ms mixed in, and one more mission with Ethan Hunt and the IMF.
