The Last Game Before the Games
This afternoon, the men's national team will take on world's number 3 Germany in what is their last friendly before heading to Paris for the Olympics. Men's hoops survived South Sudan on Saturday 101-100 in a game their stars mostly slept walked through. Which is nothing new for this team that has yet to cover a spread in friendlies and is only averaging 97.5 points a game. However, is this the game the States flip the switch, or will they continue to not care until Paris?
This is a good question that makes for some uncertainty in the betting market. The current spread is USA -16, up two points in the last four hours, with a total of 186.5. Team totals are 102.5 for the States and 86.5 for the Germans, who are averaging 88.3 in their last three friendlies.
The last time these two teams met, Germany triumphed over the United States 113-111, although the US features a much improved roster than when they met last September. Looking at all this data, one thing is certain: Nothing is certain.
The only data point we can glean is that 10 months ago, a team without many of this roster's stars was able to score 111 on the same German team. Based on that data point, I like the United States team total over 102.5. The possibility of this team continuing to sleepwalk until it matters looms large. However, I like the lads to be out for some revenge and show the world how they are rounding into form after almost dropping a shocker on Saturday. USA! USA! USA!
The Pick: USA Team Total Over 102.5 (-110)
